Historical Background
Situated at 165 metres above sea level, Baschi one of the largest towns in the province of Terni. A town with Etruscan origins, it has many monuments dating back to the Romans. Its name derives from the Latin word "vasculum", whose root "vas" means vessel, basin. The term seem to be justified by the specific characteristics of the land, which has many depressions and basins along the Tevere River. Since the XI century Baschi has been characterised by adventurous events and stories; it was initially an indipendent village, it subsequently fell under the control of the newly created State of Italy, together with Orvieto and Todi.

Archaeology
Some years ago an Early Imperial Roman settlement was found around Scoppieto. It was characterised by the production of fine tableware pottery, made up of the so-called "sealed ground" mainly used for plates, coffee or tea cups, red bowls throughout the first century AD. It can be assumed that the Scoppieto factory was set up in the Augustan Age, given the coins and oil lamp that were discovered later on. In Roman times, like today, pottery factories used to sign their products. The name of the producer was written in the inner part of the palte, at the bottom. In Scoppieto many fragments were found which had been made by mainly two potter: Lucios Plot () Por() and Lucios Plo () Zosimus, who founded a factory here which operatede up until the years 70-80 AD. The two potters decided to open a factory in this area probably because there were many natural resources such as clay, wood and water, namely the three fundamental elements necessary to run a furnace. During excavation which started in September 1995 by the Ministero dei Beni Culturali e Ambientali (Ministry for Cultural and Environmental Heritage Conservation), eight rooms divided into two parallel parts were brought back to light, together with a furnace and a decanting tank, covering a surface of 1.500 frequentable square metres.

It is recommended to visit
which is still preserved in its original structure, is particularly evocative. It is called "I Buchi" (The Wholes), because of the small size of its houses and lanes. It's real ancient world very well preserved. The Church of Saint Niccolò, XVI century, which has been awarded the title of national monument, was made following the sober style of the architect Ippolito Scalza. Inside there is a valuable triptych of Giovanni by Paolo Senese, XV century; above the door there is a marvellous organ with 500 pipes dating back to 1700. In the historical centre there is the Municipal Palace within which you can visit the Antiquarium, a particularly interesting place, and the Marroca, which is a big stone head whose origin is unknown but is thought to date to the XVI century.
